Yep, you heard right, the watch people. :) They make excellent digital cameras, and have been doing so about as long as anyone else. What someone else said about a maker that uses quality lenses is quite true. You will note that Sony uses Carl Zeiss lenses in many cameras. Casio uses Canon lenses, and in fact my $370 Casio QV3000EX (now superceded, of course) used the same lens as Canon's former top of the line PowerShot G1 which sold for 2-3 times as much money. My camera has been a real workhorse, has been dropped many times, on over 170 miles of hiking, to countless beaches and dust covered rally roads.

Unfortunately, they tend to be hard to find locally, but you can find them online, and I would strongly recommend that even if you buy your camera locally, PLEASE get your extra memory and batteries online! You will be gouged at retail for memory cards and such, worse than a car dealer does on parts. :)

Generally speaking, you'd want to narrow down your choices by figuring out what features you must have, which you'd like, and which you couldn't care less about. However, for $300-400, there are any number of cameras which will provide you just about all the features you will want, except perhaps a super high power optical zoom.

Anyhow, for as many reviews as you could possibly ever want, and the most thourough reviews at that, go to this site:
