I can't see why its so hard to present accident/injury/fatality stats on a per mile bases using info already on hand. One could easily throw in control factors for known phenomena such as trip style, urban density, etc. and end up with conclusions like:
Based on driver data, there is a a 1% chance that you will get into some sort of accident, of which there is a 99% probablity of no-injury, .06 probablity of rollover abd resulting injury, and a .0027% chance that you will die and a for each mile that you drive your beached whale of an SUV. Then re-represent the data for 'normal' commutes, road trips, etc. Add in data for day of week and time, so that the reader could interpret the data for freeway commutes during the week, weekend road trips, etc.
I'm sure that when all is said and done, you'd be left with the inescapable conculusion that you odds are better in a safe, nimble sedan that in an SUV for all routine trips except weekend/holiday nights in urban areas (where and when drunk drivers infest the roads).
