I love Saab, and I intend to keep buying Saabs, but there's a lot more hype than substance here. Sport-hatch? 'fastback' shape? "a cross-over point between hatchback and wagon"? Gimme a break. It's no different from any other sport-wagon: a station wagon restyled to look sporty.
Now, from an auto-maker's point of view, and from most people's points of view, this car makes a lot more sense than a hatchback. It's got more utility and a stiffer structure. And for the general American public, a wagon has less stigma than a hatch (although, for me, a wagon means married with kids, and I'm just not ready for that yet :) ). It's exactly what Saab needs, since the 9-2 will be able to fill the needs of the not-yet-married-with-kids-but-still-wants-utility people like me.
Still, I'm a little disappointed with all the "we've developed the next great crossover" hype. The real reason for it is to be able to say to the old hatchback-faithful, "look, we're bringing you a hatchback! but wait...we've even made it better!". It's a wagon...nothing wrong with that, but call it what it is.
