Generally torque is acceleration and H.P. is speed. It takes H.P. to run at max speed but torque to get there. Torque at high engine speed requires the engine to be turning at high speed for best acceleration. With torque flat between 1800 to 4000 or so R.P.M. max accleration is avaliable at low engine speed, very handy in every day driving. Not many people rev their engines above 3000 R.P.M. on the way to the store or work.
The way engine torque curves are generated by the manufacture can be very interesting especially with a turbo. Do they acquire the data with increasing engine speed or decreasing, and how fast is the engine speed allowed to increase or decrease, or is the torque measured at static speeds. There are standards for doing this, but very seldom are the standards quoted by the manufacture. Significant hysterisis in the torque curve can be obtained between increasing and decreasing speed, guess which one they publish. This leads us to, how does Saab get that little spike in their torque at 1800 RPM or so?
