Let me first tell you that I subscribe to Car & Driver, Autoweek, and Automobile. I also purchase the occasional Car Magazine from the newstand.
Autoweek--comes every week. You will hear the news first, and see what's new before anyone else. However, if you are only going to get one magazine, this may be too limiting. They do not do any comparison tests, 1/2 of the magazine is devoted to racing, and you can see all of their articles for free on their website: autoweek.com. I usually plow through my autoweek in about 15 minutes, and then wonder why I subscribe to it. After 5 years, this will be my last subscription.
Car & Driver--Yes, they are having an affair with BMW. Otherwise, they give pretty good comparisons (BMWs usually win) and give you the latest news and sneak peaks. Again, all of their info is available on their website for free: caranddriver.com. I like the mag, though, and will keep on getting it.
Automobile Magazine: I like this one the best. Good comparisons, good stories, good news and insider information. I also like a feature they do on evaluating a car's design. This one is like a better version of Car and Driver. I would highly recommend this mag, if you are only going to get one.
Motor Trend--stay away! This is a piece of crap, in my opinion. They sell their "motor trend's car of the year" award to the highest bidder, and I cannot get past that. It is garbage and just complete advertising.
Car--yummy! big glossy pages, almost like a coffee table book, and good stories. The problems: very expensive, and most of the cars are specific to Europe. It is nice to see what they have available over there, but then you will feel bad about what we are able to buy on our shores. Very nice for the occasional read, though.
Road & Track--very similar to car and driver, but always feels a month or two behind. Not much more to say.
