You know, I don't like pretentiousness any more than the next guy, but I'm convinced it can be used for good instead of evil.
As others have eloquently stated, the average NA car-buyer appears to believe the following statements are true.
1 A desirable small car, indicative of a succesful and sophisticated single person/young married couple living a modern, urban lifestyle, is a European car which costs more than others in its size class, which possesses a style evocative of those thrillingly stylish movie scenes set in picturesque European capitals, and which sacrifices little toward pedestrian concerns such as utility. This throwaway gesture toward utility is a sign of wealth and/or power.
2. A large desirable car is an SUV, as such a behemoth is indicative of a secure, well established (and ruggedly adventerous!) family and/or a couple/individual with lots of friends who surround him/her constantly. A power broker definitely "needs the room" which is precisely why he "traded in the Beemer". The cost, inefficiency, surreal amenities and imposing size of such a large premium vehicle is a sign of a wealth and/or power.
3. Those, who like the author, look down their noses at the marketing-driven, disposable, design-deficient products spoon-fed to the masses in exchange for natural resourse depletion and overpiled landfills, are probably 'hopped up on goofballs" and/or "taking crazy pills."
I say one should be pretentious about having an appreciation for good design, not for ostentatiously wasting resources.
