Well, the American car makers are somewhat concerned about saving lives, since safety has become a selling point, and don't forget that Chrysler is really a German company (for a while, anyway).
I also don't think this will happen, but for a different reason. SUV-lovers would strongly resist having shorter vehicles, and the auto makers know this. The article's survery shows the highest response from people who demand a "bird's-eye view" from their SUV. Why, I don't know, perhaps they get better cell-phone reception being up so high.
Frankly, I think they should jack up the height of SUVs to the point where I can get a clear view of the road underneath them. That would also solve the car-SUV collision problem, except when driving behind one trying to go under a bridge.
