The reviewer makes at least one good point: I own a 1996 900s, w/125K miles, and I'm ready to buy another car. But it won't be a Saab.
Why? Because I want a hatch. I love hatchbacks. If I lived in Europe, I could pick from dozens of models. Yet Saab decided they needed to go more mainstream.
Sales have increased in the US w/the new 9-3, but who's to say it's due to being a traditional sedan? It could just have easily done as well if it was a hatch; perhaps people are buying it because it's a new model, it's more appealing than the older one, etc., and they would have bought one, sedan or not.
Lexus sells luxury hatchbacks, and I'm sure Saab could do well with them also. I'm actually looking at the next generation Prius; if I can wait, I'll certainly consider the Saab sport hatch, but who knows when that will finally make it to market.
If Saab had been smart, they would have developed a sedan and wagon version simultaneously, and hit up GM for a few million more in development funds to do so.
