My family's examples of Chrysler quality (long) Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] (#22) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Randy Thatcher) on Fri, 26 Sep 2003 00:47:15 In Reply to: Re: Funny about the Pacifica tanking, washaerp, Thu, 25 Sep 2003 12:21:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My old man only buys their minivans to load up and go to trade shows. They're better on gas than a big Econoline, and it fits his stuff. They're a pretty decent ride, too, unlike a a big V8 cargo van. Maybe a posh conversion van with seats yanked out would be nice, but it would guzzle the gas. I digress.
He buys one, runs it to 120k or 150k, buys a new one, then uses the old one for around town errands. He's done this since they started making them in the 80's and he's never had a problem. In the early days he only got the 4-banger as the V6 versions his friends had ate transmissions for breakfast.
He is pretty lax on the service. Oil changes when he gets around to it. The concept of a "major service" is lost on him. Gas, oil, tires when they wear out. I assume he gets a tune-up or 3 in the 150k. Things like coolant flushes or brake bleeds probably never happen.
My sister had a Dodge Spirit (Acclaim?). Maybe a 89 or 90 model. What a hunk of crap. It was ugly, slow, uncomfortable, and had plenty of problems. I drove that car from Dayton Ohio, to Chicago, then to Denver when she moved out to denver. I don't know what was worse: the car, or the boring drive across Iowa and Nebraska.
I had the stripped down Dodge Shadow hatchback I bought while on co-op during college. I put 80k on it in about 2 years, and only changed the oil every 3k. Never a problem.
I got a Neon Highline Coupe after that, 24k in maybe 2 or 3 years, no problems. My buddy when through 3 headgaskets on the same car. One blew and then went again in 1000 miles, and the dealer didn't eat the replacement cost. But my buddy was young and didn't push it with the dealer to pick up the tab. He hated his, and I liked mine. It had the smoothest stick shift I've driven. Never notchy and felt really good.
Then I got a 9-3, which is a DREAM. The most trouble prone car I've ever owned was a 1985 Ford Escort. Next is my 1990 SPG. But, I'm in love with the car and I deal with problems as they come up. The only thing I worry about is the tranny. So far so good at 124k, but the clock is ticking. Hopefully the Honda MTF will keep her going.
