In the early 80's, I seriously considered buying a used XJ sedan. I think the Series 2 XJ's are one of the best looking cars ever made. I first tried to buy one from a private owner, but it sold before I could sell my Dodge 600 (try not to laugh too much, at least it was the "ES" model). I then test drove an XJ12 at a local used car dealer. It drove like a dream, but a peek under that hood caused me to question if I really wanted to own something that complex. That big V-12 engine stuffed in there, with all its hoses and wires, is really quite intimidating. I also drove a beautiful chocolate brown XJ6 at a Jag dealer in Indianapolis. After coming back from an enjoyable test drive, I parked the car at the dealership, only to discover a stream of green coolant running out from under the front end when I stepped out. That was enough to convince me that we needed a more reasonable/reliable car. We bought a new Volvo 740 Turbo wagon, and it served us well for over 100,000 miles.
Oh, I did also look at a used XJ-S a few years ago. I think they're beautiful cars, too, but...
