grey water in battery

I was suspecting a bad battery on my car. Car was jump started, run for about 25 minutes, volt meter was reading 13.8V on the dash, but the car wouldn't restart. So, I tried to trickle charge it and it wouldn't take any juice. I read the specific gravity and the cells read low on all cells. So, I brought it in to Auto Zone...they said they would check it. They charged it for about 2 hours and it tested "good". When I brought it home, I noticed all the cells now had grey water. Did they overheat & damage my battery with a quick charge? The car started fine after reinstallation. Now I'm wondering what's really wrong with my charging system and/or battery. Any help? Thanks
