For years I have clipped claws and provided a sisal door mat as the only approved place to claw. Any time the kitten starts to claw anything pick em up and put them on the mat. They prefer the rough and non-snagging material over fabric and carpet. My cats come in from their 30 min. outside in the morning to claw at the mat. To clip claws you need to train them from youth to allow you to handle their feet & claws. As kittens hold them and massage and inspect their feet/claws. My 19# n/male lies on his back in my lap and purrs while I trim his nails.
