As prescribed by the Texas Driver's Education Handbook, a 3-second interval seems sufficient for highway speeds (approx. 70 mph). Tailgating is a real pet-peeve of mine and I don't tolerate it a great deal, even though I should since I live near Nashville wild-and-crazy traffic. If anyone ever gets too close for comfort, I always apply a little pressure on the brake so that my tail-lights come on, but the brake isn't actually applied. This usually helps the situation, but I don't recommend it in some situations. I wish law enforcement would crack down on this issue a bit more, but it's almost too large a problem to address. My paranoia has only grown worse since I was rear-ended a few weeks ago...now not only does my tolerance decrease when someone rapidly approaches, but my heart pressure increases, as well. I suppose life goes on and people like us are left stranded, ranting to no avail. One other note - when you're tailgating someone because they don't possess your desire to drive 90 mph, flashing your brights at them really does help...ha. Drive safely, and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
