You could do an '87-'91 325i convertible...that BMW chassis is pretty solid, and the 2 valve per cylinder 6 cylinder has a great sound to it. (I used to drive a 325iX until it was hit and totalled). Great build quality too.
Otherwise, in that year range, you're talking older 5 liter Mustangs (which will all be POS's by now), maybe a worn out MB 380SL (560SL's get a nice premium these days).
Plenty of British car options though...MGB, Triumph TR7 or TR8 (a nice condition TR8 will cost you 8 to 10K...). The TR8s sound so good..and the Buick V8 is pretty serviceable. The key with these cars is to buy the nicest one you can afford. I had an '80 MGB....talk about character! Only broke down 5 times in 5 years...but the sound, the looks from other drivers, and surprisingly, the space inside! It made my ex-Miata look really tiny.
Miata is another option...granted, I sold my '01 Miata for a '91 900T convertible and it was definitely the right choice! I miss my MGB though...and need a British car in the stable again soon.
Just a few thoughts...
Cheers,
Paul H.
