Hey, it's OK. I understand. Really. If I wanted to use a Castrol synthetic oil, EC 0W-30 would definitely be it. (I guess it would HAVE to be, since the other Castrols aren't real synthetics ...)
But what about the 9k mile UOA? And the 12k mile UOA? By the time I add Auto-Rx to my 9³'s oil, it'll be 9k miles & 14 months old. By the time I dump it out, it'll be 11k miles & 16 or 17 months old. I have no worries with a real synthetic like Mobil 1. Who's willing to do that with this Castrol 30 wt?
Sure, the 0W-40 shears down in a Saab turbo, but don't forget to point out that it shears down to what EC starts out at new! If EC turns out to be stable to 10k or 12k miles, great! But I don't want to be the test subject.
I missed kaslop's Canadian location. No, I wouldn't run the 15W-50 there. But by the same token, the 7k mile/16 month old M1 15W-50 in my '90 C900 started up fine this winter at 0°F. Well, OK, I've added one liter of Saab's A3 rated 5W-30 semi syn over all that time, so it wasn't full 15W-50 (or full syn, for that matter). And I'm hoping the new M1D turns out to be what we're already speculating it is.
I think EC's great stuff, & under normal conditions it might work absolutely fine. I'm just saying kaslop should maybe start out with something a little more robust for his current situation. At 6k km intervals, he could probably use Shell's Rotella T syn 5W-40 with absolutely zero worries regarding fuel contamination.
