These are the big three and make (in my opinon) the best products.

I'm personally partial to my 3.3megapixel Olympus C740 (or you might want the 4megapixel C750, which also does sound recording + hotshoe). Not only does it have a 10X OPTICAL (remember: digital zoom doesn't count) zoom, but it does Super Macro as close as 3 cm! I'd say that some of my most amazing photos so far (and I've taken 2200 photos with it since July) have been macro shots. It's got all-glass lens elements and is ED (extra-low dispersion), which apparently helps make images more detailed and clear. You'll notice that the actual lens on the camera is significantly larger than many (even "prosumer") digicams in the <$500 bracket. You can probably get the C740 for $350 or less now. I really really enjoy the camera -- it's small enough that I can put it in my coat pocket, and not too heavy, but it still has a "real" feeling lens.

Another thing to consider: the C740 takes AA batteries, so you can pick up replacements ANYWHERE, don't need some special proprietary ones. With a good set of NiMH batteries, this camera has pretty good staying power, especially if you don't use the big LCD.

If I were buying now, I might consider the C750 just because it's 4mp, but my 3.3mp does 8x10s with virtually no quality loss; get a good printer and you can make some very very nice prints with this camera. You don't need more than 3.3 or 4 megapixels if you're not going beyond 11x14" prints.

Check out the link -- I'd highly recommend either of these cameras.

ALSO -- as someone else mentioned, http://www.dpreview.com is an excellent resource.
