O.K., let me make it clear that my company sells the Trendnet wireless networking products. So those are the ones I know about. Other brands may perform differently.
As far as my own test results have shown, 11b, 11g, you are unlikely to notice any difference in downloading etc. The through-put of both is still far higher than your cable modem speed!
When you might notice diffrences, is when several computers are accessing the internet at the same time. In my house I have ran 5 computers at the same time from one wireless network router. My two eldest kids have their own PC's, I have two older laptops, and one from the company. Plus I have a Tower system directly wired into the router. No speed problems on either 11b and 11g when I decide to fire up all of them at the same time.
As far as security is concerned: the Trendnet system at least comes with a password protected encryption system to allow secure communication between all PC's connected to your private network. Will also keep your neighbour from hacking into your network to get free internet access!
Some wireless routers are better than others in terms of area coverage. I have audited the coverage of several from different companies in order to compare them against what we sell. Top or bottom doesn't make any difference to radio waves. Remember that... You can also get booster areals that can allow wireless network communication for several miles! But for normal house operation, the standard whip areal that they come with is more than enough.
Next, get a PDA and wireless network card. Then you are talking!! Lucky me I only had to pay for the iPAQ PDA. The network components were given to me for "testing purposes"..
Feel free to come back on any other questions.
But note that some wireless phones can interfere with your wireless network.
