Private sellers vs dealers.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Fri, 23 Apr 2004 17:51:12 In Reply to: Hard to sell a car??, 97 Aero, Fri, 23 Apr 2004 16:46:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Private sellers have many disadvantages vs us dealers. 'Course some people are just empowered and selling anything to anybody is childs play, but on the other hand let me tell you what you are up against.
A dealer offers financing. I imagine a 98 Vert is still a $12-15k car. That's not really a cash range for most folks, so offering financing is especially important. If your selling an older car for less than $10k, or better still less than $5k than people have cash, but over $10k most regular folks need financing.
A dealer offers trade ins. A very large percentage of buyers have a car they need to dispose of. A dealer becomes particularly important if the trade in has a balance or a payoff. Dealers carry the float which means they allow people to use their equity (negative or positive) immediately and not wait for the payoff process.
A dealer has a convienent location, probably with some major display frontage on a thorougfare, is open extended hours, and also has a professional sales staff to handle inquiries.
Dealers have big advertising budgets.
And dealers have patience. The *average* car sells in 30-60 days. That means some go away in the first week or two and some perfectly wonderful cars stick around months and months and months.
