It is large and will suck the heat away. So the amount of heat is an issue.
Yes there is a danger of explosion. Such things can be done if the area is purge with CO2 or nitrogen and that flow is kept on. That is done for locomotive fuel tanks, only 5 thousand gallons, perhaps more.
Damage to the bottom of the pan will be a problem as you can't readily get all of the oil out or away from the repair. So getting the area clean and oil free seems impossible.
