that you are using a reputable, honest dealer in the first place. Nor all dealers are. And as cars get more complex it is easier for dealers to be more than a little careless with the truth when dealing customers and servicing their cars.
I am always Mr. Nice with a dealer, and indy, anyone I do business with (I'm self-employed). But the place being nice seems less likely to help is at a car dealer. In most cases, you are just another number. In my experience most dealers don't care. And they care even less if you didn't also buy the car from them.
I'd rather bring the coffee and donuts to my indy--where they know me by first name and know my cars--and drop off an occasional case of beer on a Friday than do anything extra for a dealer.
My indy's business model is to deliver excellent service and great value for his customers. My dealer's model is to get them to buy another car. Since I keep cars for half of forever, that's not in my best interest.
