If you look up articles about the accident, all they know is the SUV approached two cars (on in each lane of a 2-lane highway) at high speed and passed them in the _breakdown lane_, clipped one, lost control and rolled a ton of times, ended up in a tree. When you go into the trees at highway speeds, all bets are off no matter what make or model you drive.
Granted SUVs have big stability/rollover problems, and instill a wholly false sense of security in the driver, but I get the sense this accident was way above and beyond that. Maybe that second part was more of a factor than the first in this horrible waste.
I have a cabin up in Maine, people on the highways drive F-A-S-T. It's ludicrous. (Maybe it's just 'people passing through'...locals on backroads conversely do the limit minus 5 or 10).
