I totally agree with the folks below but add a few thoughts.
If you are looking for honda or toyota reliability (gas and oil changes seem to be the rumor), you will be disappointed with a SAAB in terms of maintenance costs. But, a SAAB is 2000 times more fun to drive. Yes, they are reliable, but routine wear and tear maintenance can be expensive. Many folks here are serious DIY mechanics, and can save tons of money that way. I think one also notices minor things more with a SAAB b/c they are a more performance oriented car, and little things show more than with generic appliance cars - especially if you drive enthusiastically. So, you end up spending more to keep that sweet feeling. If the car has 100K on the original shocks and struts, be prepared to drop say $1,500 (rough estimate) for new shocks and struts (will really improve the ride and handling).
I have a '97 900s (no turbo), my first SAAB, with 117K on it and have had the following non wear and tear issues:
Neutral Safety Switch bad on auto tranny (a known issue).
SRS Contact Switch went bad in steering column, causing horn to not work.
That's it. Oh, and a tire shop stripped a hole in my hub.
Other than that, she runs like a champ and still gets 30+ mpg highway, and can haul a ton of stuff. We're looking for a 9-3 or 9-5 in the next year or so.
Go for it!
