I did the same thing a few years back. I rode a Motobecane 10 speed to death after college and needed a means of exercize a few years later so I bought a Trek hybrid, model 600 I think. I thought it was a solid bike for moderate trail/street use. Its not an offroad bike and its too heavy and upright as strictly a road bike.
If you are more inclined to bike paths and unpaved trails I like Cort's idea. I eventually traded up to a full out Trek road bike with Look clip in pedals. I enjoyed the rythem and speed of road riding more than the paths.
