we need better public transport in the US. You save even more fuel if you don't drive at all, or at least drive less.

I spent 10 days in Amsterdam and Germany last month and used a lot of public transport. Buses and trains were all on time, generally clean and fast. Even nice for a distance, like A-dam to Dusseldorf. We just cooked along at 130 to 160 kmh. Quiter than my 9K and certainly quieter than a plane.

I hate public transport most places in the US, but over there it is painless. The people I stayed with in a suburb of Dusseldorf don't even own a car.

If we had cheap, relaible efficient public systems in the US we would need a lot less cars in the cities and toys like the Prius would be a lot less necessary.
Unfortunately it won't happen for 50 years or longer here.
