On my 92 900S 5 speed, the engine is fine at 200,000 miles, I generally over do fluid chages and ignition parts to make it easy on the engine. Other than that, its "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

That said, once something is worn, I apply a different rule. After this stretch with this car, my current theory is that when something has to be changed, ie, shocks, then do everything related at once, ball joints, tie rods, suspension bushing and maybe wheel bearings. Its just easier to go in and do it all at once and then have a new lease on life. I think many address the immediate issue and when the next item wears they start to hate the car due to repair costs.

Use some logic, if the clutch needs replacement, do the slave, master cylinders and throw out bearing at the same time. If you are doing a water pump, chances are the T-stat and hoses should be replaced as long as the system is drained. New rotors demand new pads and while you are at it, replace the brake fluid.

I will soon address midlife crises on my 97 9000 CS, doing motor mounts and serp belt and pullies at the same time; if shocks were questionable I'd do them, strut bearings and ball joints while I'm in there. Its more for parts at that moment, but time is money too. I won't be in there for another 100,000 miles and the car will ride like new.

Of course this theory works only if you DIY or have a friendly mechanic that will give you a break on book hours for working on related areas. I mean, once you pull a wheel to do a ball joint, are you replicating that part of the process to replace a shock and tie rod bushing? No, but that's not the way a dealer bills, they do book time by individual task. Not critcizing, just noting that seems to be the rule.
