buyer really see it that way?
I maybe wrong, the size of the monthly nut is a big deal--and a deciding factor-- to most buyers. People figure they can spend X dollars/mo, have a few makes/models in mind, and make their choice. It's what fits their budget and cash flow *now*. Same thing if they buy used--except they own the car when they are done, which is important to many people, regardless of the car's value.
As others note, using trade-in value in your analysis is misleading, as dealers rarely give buyers a good deal on that. (I know it's a logical argument from a dealer's POV and in closing a deal.) But not necessarily from a customer's perspective. The value of a car is what you can get for it on the open market, not from a dealer. Better to say what a car would be worth sold privately to measure whether leasing new or buying the same car used is a better deal. Then the $18K car is worth say, $7-8K (or more), not $3-5K.
The other aspect is do used car buyers tend to keep cars after the loan is paid? If they do, they get a lot more value out of the car, even with maintenance factored in.
Cars are ultimately disposable goods, its just a matter of how you choose to pay for them and where you threshold of pain is.
