At the July 4th parade and festivities in Amherst, NH yesterday, the Sierra Club had a guy in the parade with a new Prius, which was on display following the parade. Lots of people were asking the guy questions.

I chatted with him for a while and it was clear he was an ardent supporter of the car and its concept (no, he's not a dealer or Toyota salesman). He drives about 40 miles to work each day, mixing highway and city and gets about 53 mpg, he claims. He admits to the fact that it is slow on hills and that he pisses drivers behind him off --"screw 'em, let 'em wait," was his attitude.

What was more interesting was how he said the system monitoring display gave immediate feedback on mileage. Boasted how in traffic where the gas engine doesn't engage much (up to about 35 mph) he gets 75 to 100 mpg. And how he has gotten 73 mpg at 65 going down a hill--when presumably the gas engine shuts off.
He said the immediate feedback makes you more conscious of how you drive, which for this guy, was part of the fun--finding out just what kind of mileage he can get.

On the other hand, he said he got about 45 mpg driving to NYC (235 miles) last week. But he was sticking to the speed limit. I observed that I didn't think that was anything to write home about, since my 9K will get 35 at a 75 on the same trip. But he ignored the point that he had this hybrid car that is really only marginally better than an 8-year old Saab on what is a key use for many people. Never mind the safety and comfort factors the Prius lacks that are present on the Saab.

He also dissed the issue of a $3000+ battery replacement at 7 years, instead pointing out how long the gas engine will probably last because it isn't used as much. "We don't know about real battery life," he said. Which is true, but it's an issue he wanted to avoid.

He paid list for the car in March. Now that dealers are hosing people for extra profit it makes a hybrid much harder to rationalize if you do the math--another point he tried to avoid.

Interesting chat.
