I've done a few ways. On floors you need a solid starting surface over the joists. 3/4 ply is probably standard. Then add either the concrete based sheets (as described in other posts) or the ceramic based hardibacker. Note that hardibacker eats jigsaw blades for lunch. You may spend more on blades than the board. Use MANY screws and get a solid floor going. Screws must be flush or countersunk, any screws sticking up will cause problems with cracks or uneven tiles. The concrete can be scored kinda like sheetrock.
The wet saws you can get from Home Depot or Harbor Freight for somewhere between 90-150 are great. So far I've done 2 bathroom floors in ceramic, a vanity top in natural stone, a kitchen backsplash in granite, and some rework on the kitchen floor in ceramic. All this in 6 months. The wet saw is SOOOOO handy.
Spend the dough on good tile, too. I've seen some that looks like a cheap silkscreen or printed "pattern" on the tile. It may look ok from 10 feet away, but it looks like crap up close in my opinion.
