Scott,
I understand your concern with AOL. Having both CS and Economics degrees, I like to think that I have some good knowledge about Technology issues, or at least used to. Unfortunately with my current position, I do not spend a lot of time concentrating on the market, not nearly as religious as I used to, and can't offer any current specifics.
However, I would like to offer this - One odd thing about AOL is something that you do mention, which is their "Services" offered over/on-top-of an existing connection. Yes people realize they don't have to subscribe to AOL, but continue to do so. Us, more tech-saavy users find it odd people will pay for this, especially on a monthly basis, as there are other places for chat, shopping, etc. BUT, AOL is fairly easy to use and incorporates what a lot of users are looking for in one place. As more people catch on, yes their market share will decrease, but they are working to combat this. They offer access to AOL Chat rooms, shopping, keywords, etc. for $10 or $15, depending how much it currently is, if you already have a connection. A lot of people like this option. Especially those who started with the trial membership, and although find cheaper Internet access, miss the one-stop services.
Not sure about a specific broadband pipeline, but AOL and Time Warner continue to have a large market share with Broadband, as RoadRunner is one of few visible options at your old stomping grounds (Rochester), and AOL Broadband is everywhere (OCC?!). Another reason is that they make it difficult for you to cancel. I did this on several occasions when I had been with AOL, and each time I called to cancel, it was always a cheaper or for free rate for a few more months.
I think I got off-topic, but I hope you got something out of it. Does your Broker have specific research pertaining to AOL and TWX? Unfortunately, even with all of the info out there at our fingertips, Brokers, well the good ones, have and get access to stuff we might not come across on your most fave (Google) search engines. Are there better places for your money might be the next question?!
Food for thought. Just my (perhaps old, wrong, stale) opinion(s). Thanks.
Sean
