I don't know about other shoppers, but the reason I went for new versus CPO is the haggle factor.
Right now on saabcertified.com there are two 2004 CPO Aero sedans listed -- one for $35K and one for $42K. That's right; 42! What is the price at which those dealers will actually sell those cars? We have no idea; to find out, you have to haggle, and to get a good price, you have to be good at haggling. In contrast, you can walk into any SAAB delaership in the country right now and buy an Aero sedan from their inventory for around 9K under MSRP, or around $31 to 34K depending on options. (Probably less if you like to haggle.) You can do it with a minimum of hassle, you can be in and out in a couple of hours, and you can be certain that you got an okay deal. Oh, and by the way, you can keep your cash in the bank, because the new car comes with lease financing that is essentially free: three years same as cash, and if you don't want to keep it after three years, you can put it back to the dealer for half what you paid.
I'd like to have the CPO warranty, but there is a limit to how much of a premium, in money and hassle, that I am willing to pay for it.
That's just one person's reasoning; your mileage may vary.
