A couple suggestions -
Take the time to find one that fits you properly. Any good bike shop can help with this. If you can, don't just buy the cheapest one - find one that fits you well. All brands are pretty much OK in terms of quality, but have different fit/dimensions/geometry. Its kind of like ski boots - fit is so critical for your long term enjoyment.
If you can swing slightly more $$, try to get at least Shimano 105 level components on the bike - they're a little better quality. Buy a better bike than you initially need because you will likely catch the bug and grow into the bike.
Steel frames (like the Fuji Roubaix Pro, what I ride and love it) are generally a bit smoother than aluminum. WHile aluminum is lighter and stiffer, it can be less comfortable, but its really personal preference.
Good luck! Road riding is great
