You're not the only one, but there are more people who wouldn't buy a Saab before and are considering one now than there are people like you.
Honestly, I like the look of the new 9-3, although I'd never buy a sedan. Thing is, the new 9-3 doesn't compete in the same market as the C900 did. The 9-3 is a much more expensive car, even considering inflation.
For example, where I fit into things is a 20-something who appreciates the practicality of a hatchback and feels too young to own a wagon. But I can't afford a new 9-3, so even if they offered it as a hatchback, I wouldn't be interested. Maybe a base 9-2X, or otherwise a Mazda3 would be a nice car if I were buying new.
When I have the money to buy a new 9-3 or 9-5, I'll probably be less concerned about the stigma of a wagon. But Saab knows that they can't sell hatchbacks to people with the money Saab is asking for (at least not very many). They tried in the 90s, with the 9000 and NG900/9-3, and they lost money. Now that they're going back downmarket with the 9-2X, closer to where the C900 was, they're offering a hatch, because the buyers in that market are more receptive to it.
Of course, I got my 9-3 used, which put it in my price range. Sucks for people like me that there won't be a market of really nice, used hatchbacks, but Saab can't survive as a niche maker.
Back to the topic...This Tribeca is ugly in profile, in my opinion, but hopefully, either (a) it will look better when we see the character lines, etc, or (b) the Saab version will look very different.
