I made the same change back in 1997. I was a project manager doing proposals and babysitting designers. I had lots of perks as a project manager but the pay could be better like you said. I had the opp. to move into sales and within 3 years I had enough contacts to start my own buss. Now i own a machine shop, build fac. and engineering/design. But i was in automotive assembly and we took a big hit. So most of the project managers in the area do not have a job I was small enough with low overhead at the time to survive. I would make the new move if i were you. You have the chance to make new contacts and still be able to renew old contacts. The engineering bus. (at least in Michigan) is mostly about who you know.
