By flat screen I assume that you mean the screen itself is flat and this is a traditional tube television. Also, I assume that this is a traditional 4:3 size vs the 16:9 widescreen format.
That being the case, it's up to your personal preference. What the other folks posted here is all true. A rounded screen is a bit weird but if you have a large room then a larger TV would be more necessary. If you will be closer, a smaller better quality TV might be better.
Why not go to a 32" widescreen? That is effectively like a 27" 4:3 TV when watching regular TV however so size really matters when you go widescreen.
A friend of mine is quite pleased with his DLP TV. It's a 50" widescreen. They're much better than traditional projection TVs but I still have a problem with projection so I went with a 42" plasma. Now I'm in a bigger house and the 42" plasma is too small but I like the picture quality.
If I were to do it again today, I'd get a flat panel LCD TV for my last house or a DLP style TV for my current house.
