THE END OF SAAB IN TROLLHÄTTAN
(translation from Norwegian)
PARIS: It’s definately coming to an end for an era in Swedish car making industry. General Motors can no longer defend the costs of production at the Saab factory in Trollhättan, and will in the near future announce that they are moving the production of Saab from Trollhättan (Sweden) to the Opel factory in Rüsselsheim, Germany. GM plans reduce the number of employees in Norway with 3000, hitting Trollhättan hard. The GM takeover of Saab has not been very sucessfull. There’s been just losses and losses, and now the chairman of GM/Opel Europe, Fritz Henderson, wants to end production in Trollhättan. All Opel Vectras, Signum and Omega, and Saab 9-3 and 9-5, will be built in the same factory. GM counts on considerable reductions of costs by doing this. The idea is that also new Fiats could be produced in Germany. The final word from GM on this won’t come until December, but the signals from the chairman leaves no doubt what the decision will be.
NB! Other news stories are not as crystal clear as this. What is true though, is that GM wants to reduce costs. There’s also been speculations about moving 9-3 production to Germany, while keeping 9-5 production on Sweden. The BIG question: Does Saab customers care where their cars are produced? I think so..
