BOSTON - Teaching, Non-Profits, and Living

Hi all,
It's getting to be about that time for the next chapter. A friend of mine and I are looking to move to Boston after completing our Teach for America commitments. We are both certified K-12 Special Education teachers. She has an interest in public teaching, and I'm leaning more in the way of nonprofits (educational, community work, etc).
What sorts of opportunities are there in Boston for these types of jobs? Also, what type of living situation might we plan on with these salaries? Should we sell our cars (GASP!)? Will we be able to live "in" the city?
Thanks!
