Where I live, Natural Gas is supplied by a regulated utility, just like electricity. Yes, they have all sorts of purchase-cost-adjustments in there, but at least I know that both the state utility regulators and a host of non-governmental consumer groups are watching. As a monopoly, but a regulated utility, their profit margin is set, and visible to all in the public record. So although I'm not happy about the price increases, I don't think I'm being more screwed than normal.
Propane and other gas not part of a regulated utility can be sold by any number of folks. Yes, competition comes in here, but only up to a point. The local suppliers are buying from distributors, and I don't know about the visibility there.
Of course, you'd need to convert your appliances to use propane, which usually involves different valving. Also, the ultimate BTU output is reduced with propane. If your furnace is sized with margin, this would probably be OK. Gas stoves and dryers won't have the same output.
