learn from my mistake and continue to use it.
I was a fanatic about it. Recorded everything because I am somewhat of a packrat. Quicken helped, as I was able to enter all financial info into it; I have been using it for maybe 8 years. Kept my expenses general as mentioned by someone else, and I used the "notes" section for what it was that I spent the money on; makes for huge help when trying to remember what you bought for that special someone on that certain occasion. For me its "only been" six years, but so many "holidays/dates" that sometimes, hey, I don't remember what I bought for when!
My mistake is DON'T STOP! Set aside some time each day, or each week, just a small amount, to sit down and go over it and enter transactions. Once a month reconcile what you have like you normally would (should). But set aside that time and use it.
I went to Vegas on a men's league hockey tourney April or May 202, and ever since coming back, I haven't touched it. Perhaps I was ashamed of the money I spent (read - lost), but for some reason I stopped being a fanatic. Now a year and a half later, every time I want to get back into it, I think too big and want to "fill the gap." So just make sure to use it small amounts to start. No need to be fanatical, but no need to neglect it.
I think you may have inspired me to get back on the horse. Now only if I can convince myself to think small, not big picture. Good luck!
