OT: Using a new iMac to watch DVD's?

Help me justify buying a new iMac with a 20 inch screen please (or not)! I am currently looking for a new computer (currently have a 350 MHz iMac with no firewire and no CD burner or DVD player) and also a plasma screen TV to replace the woefully inadequate 13 inch portable I am currently using as the display for my home theater system.
I wonder if I could combine the two - buy a new iMac with a 20" screen that I could connect up to my home theater system and use it to watch DVD's on? Is this easy to do or would it be more trouble than it's worth?
Second question - would I notice a big difference between my current 350 MHz processser and a new 1.8 GHz processor given that I don't use any graphic intensive programs (games etc.) - I mostly use it for the internet, email, digital photo storage etc. My other alternative (possibly more sensible) is to buy a slightly less old Mac than my current one, with more memory, more hard disk space and the all important CD burner and firewire ports - for about $320 on Ebay.
Decisions, decisions...
