I think it was first put out by Cincinnati Microwave or Valentine. Not sure.
Back then it was much less sophisticated. The units used to be able to show how smoothly you took turns by recording the build up and drop off of G forces throughout the turn. Very useful for road racing and some autocrossing. I had stopped autocrossing by then and never got around to getting one.

What I find amusing is that they talk about the "new" performance measurement of 0-100-0. This was a standard measurement of performance in the late '60s, and at the time the Shelby 427 Cobra would do it in about 12 seconds, IIRC, among the best at the time, and for about $6000. How times change.
