I live in Los Altos, adjacent San Jose. I did live in south SJ for a few years too. SJ is a sprawling and mostly filled suburb of nice houses on smallish lots with light industrial and business zones.
Good stuff: Can't beat the weather. Proximity to snow and skiing, the bay, the ocean, mountains, San Francisco, colleges and universities, terrific and varied food from 'round the world, your car won't rust, THE mecca of electronics and some pharmaceuticals, high salaries potentially, not much poverty, a center of immigration if you like diverse people, VERY low crime, vegetarians can survive fine (vegemite??), good music and venues, general tolerance and liberal attitudes, no hurricanse or tornados, lots of bicycle lanes.
Bad stuff: Expensive housing, it's getting crowded (although not everywhere), traffic, traffic, occasional smog (not too bad), weak night life, hard for men to find Sheilas, better not drink and drive, earthquakes (we publicise them to frighten people away; I'd prefer earthquakes to hurricanes or tornados or freezing cold), the roads are too dangerous for bicycling.
In general, live north and west of your job for best traffic paterns.
Good luck
