I have an '02 9-3 and 2 kids. Obviously you can't use the hatch and have the kids in the car at the same time. The trunk is quite large on the 9-3. I also recently test drove a wagon. I think the back of the wagon (with the rear seat in use) is not as roomy as when I have the hatch in full use. That being said, if we could only have one car (we also have a van) I think I would need to go with the wagon. It has a decent storage area and a terrific one with the seats down. Actually, driving the wagon felt a lot like my 9-3, nice car. Keep in mind that no matter what you get, with kids it's never enough. You could get a Peterbilt and end up looking for a Thule to stick on top.
