Be very careful with the stock market...

I had a meager sum in my 401(k), which I put into an IRA when I moved from AZ to CT. I put this money into well regarded stocks at the time. (One of which was a company with which I'd interviewed and was really impressive.) In the span of a few short months, my money halved in value, and has remained that way 4 years later.
Now, I do some research and select a variety of mutual funds (stocks, bonds, etc.) in different areas. I try not to get too much money involved in one area, such as technology. I'd love to be able to do enough research so that I could feel comfortable investing in individual stocks, but taking the time to research mutual funds is a lot. With stocks, you'd have to research way more than the time I can give toward this endeavor.
Plus, stock prognostication isn't good, even for the "pros." Back in the mid '80's, my broker told me to invest in Waste Magagement and a mutual fund. Over the course of several years, I made a tiny amount of money (I'd have been better off in the bank). Why didn't he tell me to invest in Microsoft? Most likely, because he didn't know. When I purchased stock for my IRA, all the "pros" were saying how great these stocks were, and then the stock market crashed. To me, it seems that if the pros are waxing euphoric over a stock, you're too late -- don't buy it.
