After your tender care, the 900 clearly lost it's will to live. The first car I ever owned (a '72 Karmann Ghia - don't ask) was babied. I sold it to a guy that figured it would be a great investment - this is 1980, by the way. He didn't even test drive it - he had me test drive it while he rode along.
About 6 months later, I saw my (ex) car in a service station. It was listing hard to port. I stopped and asked the grease monkey what the story was - the car now had no compression in one cylinder, had a burnt clutch, and had suffered a rear suspension failure. It pained me to leave it there, but that's what you have to do - move on. The car served you well, and it was it's Karma (no pun intended) to teach some lesson to the next person.
Auto problems suck. But any problem that can be fixed by a body shop beats any problem that warrants even a minor trip to the doctor.
