BMW 325i. He moved to NH from Virginia and had all-seasons that were at about 50%. He lives at the top of our hill (1/4 mile, steep). I'm at the bottom. In a moderate storm last winter I find him almost in my front yard, totally clueless, and about to walk up to get his wife's 4-Runner. I go to get a chain and before he's back I have driven his car back into the middle of the road. He's amazed. "How'd you do that?" (This from an ex-Air Force F-16 pilot.) We hook on my chain and I drive the 4-Runner, he sits in the Bimmer and I haul his butt up to his house.
THIS YEAR, he informs me, he has 2 new snows on the back and a couple of tubes of sand in the trunk. I encourage him to get two more snows for the front so he can steer more reliably (I seen this guy drive on dry roads and he is a tad shaky). We have a little snow today, but not a lot, so I'll update you if he lands in my yard.
OTOH another neighbor had to leave his older Benz diesel almost in my yard one night 5 years ago when he couldn't get to his drive way, 200 feet up from me. Then 2 years ago in about 12 inches snow, he got his Land Rover Discovery stuck, almost at his driveway. Big toothy tires and all. He waited for the town plow and paid the driver to hook on a chain and haul him out.
Then again, I think of the blizzard when WE lived at the top of a steep hill and my wife in our C900 and no snow tires led the snowplow up the hill in 7" of medium wet snow, making the first tracks in about 2 hours.
Ahhh Winter!!!
Stay safe out there, guys!
Noel
