Your serp belt went... Posted by turrbo [Email] (#8) [Profile/Gallery] (more from turrbo) on Wed, 22 Dec 2004 23:06:58 In Reply to: power steering loss, kellyd, Wed, 22 Dec 2004 21:43:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The serp belt drives the power accessories, and most importantly the water pump. When it snapped (or came off), in addition to loosing power steering and alternator power (why the battery light came on) you lost all cooling ability for the engine, which is very bad.
If you're loosing coolant, best case scenario is you need a new headgasket. Worst case would be the head is warped and you need a new head. It depends on how long you drove the car while is was overheating and whether it was long enough to damage the engine. If the temp ever goes up like that, you need to pull over immediately and shut the car off.
Most likely your not going to be happy at the cost of the fix. If there is a local Saab indy around, you'd be better off going there, because the rate will be much cheaper, and either way this will be a high-labor job.
When my serp belt snapped, I noticed the battery light on and immediately pulled over. So I didn't have any engine or even headgasket damage. The fact that you're losing coolant is not good...Good luck.
