In less than a year, my 2002 9-3 has been through a lifetime of tires (not by choice, just a lot of idiocy and ridiculousness beyond my control). Here is the rather embarrassing and costly tire soap opera:
The stock Pirelli P6000s on the 16"s were some kind of sick joke, squealing and fussing and whatnot. The Bridgestone Turanza LS-Vs I replaced them with on the 16" wheels were definitely quiet, but too harsh and lacking comfort, even when underinflated. The Pirelli PZero Neros (or whatever they're called) were nice and certainly stuck to the road, especially with my then-new 17" wheels, but they tramlined severely on grooved California roadways and that is not a nice feeling. Then, Michelin Pilot XGTs were okay but, again, with 17" wheels they were still not quite right. After ditching the 17"s, The Bridgestone Potenzas were a nightmare albeit one that didn't cost me a dime. Then finally, the set of Michelin Energy MXV4 "Plus" tires on the stock 16" wheels... they were just right. Some of you bitch and moan about hydroplaning and lame performance... I have had them for almost 7,000 miles now and they are divine. They provide the comfiest ride I have yet to find, and they really take the edge off that traditional Saab ride harshness. They offer perfectly acceptable handling, and I still haven't made them squeal (but of course I could if I wanted to). They feel confident and grippy even in the twisties and under hard acceleration.
I will forever sing the praises of these tires. You may laugh, and perhaps these are not the tires for you performance nuts, but for my comfy little Saab, they are marvelous. I love them. They are so right-on.
