There are good timeshares and bad ones, just like most other things.
Marriott and other large companies are into it. And some are remodeled not-originally-swell motels. Some are well run, others aren't.
If the style suits your way of living, then it can be a decent deal.
It does encourage you to get away for a week every year, either to your timeshare or to a trade.
Used to be relatively easy to trade. Most of the trades we got were very nice, a few were not (but the location was). The two major trading agencies have been bought up and the new owners are not necessarily interested in the wellfare and support of the traders.
I would not recommend buying from the original developers. Aftermarket prices are considerably lower and readily available. Again, do some homework--some have rotten management, high fees, limited availability, etc.
If cost is no object, the Marriotts and Hiltons are top notch. Those who are affiliated are generally very pleased.
Over the years, we've been able to trade into timeshares in Switzerland, England, Florida (near Disney), Jackson Hole (crummy place, great location), Cape Cod (another crummy place), New Mexico, Palm Springs.
On balance, I'd have done it again.
