I think most people who graduate with science and engineering degrees are motivated by the possibility that their skills will be used to producing things that will make life better for everyone, as opposed to financial services which is, essentially, motivated to increase the wealth of a few. Yes, it's true that financial services steal some of the best and brightest mathematicians and physicists, but that's only because in the present environment, sadly, they can't find jobs in math and physics. The 'complex financial calculations' that derivatives require, aren't the kind of interesting derivatives one does in engineering or science. Derivatives, in the financial sense, involves probabilities. To take on large investment projects requires complicated insurance schemes involving exchange rates, the future costs of materials, etc., needed to place bids on or finance a project. They're not the derivatives of modelling that engineers or physicists use for studying physical processes. I would agree with Mr. Tesla. Unless you're really talented with math, probability and statistics, and place 'prestige' and wealth above working with real tangible things, then financial services is a waste, IMO, for someone with real engineering skills.
