I also know about IPC vs Mhz etc.
Basically a 2.5 Ghz G5 has a hard time against a top of the range AthlonFX/Opteron, even in Photoshop. An app that was previously safe territory for Macs. Single CPU vs. Single CPU, or Dual vs. Dual. (The graph on apple.com is totally bogus. Where is the dual Opteron score? And what kind of ).
As for big time 3D rendering, most all of it is done on either Intel or AMD clusters.
I like OSX and the styling, but Mac hardware just isn't competitive for the price. Also you have to use special versions of gfx cards that are usually more expensive (and the model selection you can chose from is extremely limited). RAM upgrades are also more expensive than for PCs. Some macs you can't even upgrade yourself, because opening them invalidates your warranty. Like in the new Mac Mini. Proprietary hardware just sucks. Especially if you like to upgrade your computer when various components lag behind. It's not exactly better on the software side....
